From a single acre high on the eastern ridge of Napa Valley’s Vaca Mountains, the Melchior Kemper Vineyard Cabernet Franc captures both the precision of its site and the history embedded in the land. Planted to 962 vines at 800 feet elevation on rhyolite volcanic sands, this block traces its name back to Melchior Kemper, who owned and farmed the ranch in the late 1800s after purchasing it from Levi Philander Davis in 1881. The fruit was hand picked, fermented with native yeasts, and aged for 17 months in French oak barrels before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Composed entirely of Cabernet Franc, the wine opens with alluring aromas of blackcurrant, raspberry leaf, and Bing cherry. On the palate it is supple yet expansive, unfolding in layers of blueberry, crushed granite, and raspberry preserve.
