Whiskey for Summer!

There was a neighbor of mine who lived by a cocktail rule that had striking resemblance to the fashion rule about wearing white pants. He only drank gin cocktails from Memorial Day until Labor Day and then only whiskey cocktails the remainder of the year. This seems like a fine plan, except, if you are like me, and you crave whiskey year-round. Here are three cocktails that you can enjoy, even when summer’s temperatures are unbearable.

Red Raider

The key to this is the quality of the ingredients. Do not skimp on the grenadine or use a bottled lemon juice.

.75 oz fresh lemon juice
.5 oz Cointreau orange liqueur
.25 oz Liber’s Real Grenadine
1.5 oz Maker’s Mark Bourbon

Add all ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled. Strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with an orange peel.

Gold Rush

Think of this as a reverse hot toddy. All these ingredients, if warmed, can cure even the nastiest cold in winter, but thankfully, they can also cool you down in summer.

2 oz Knob Creek Bourbon
.75 oz Krupnik Polish Honey Liqueur
.75 oz fresh lemon juice

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake hard until well-chilled. Strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with a lemon peel.

Kentucky Paloma

One of the easiest cocktails to make also happens to be one of the tastiest. Super-thirst quenching when the heat index soars.

2 oz Four Roses Bourbon
1 bottle Fever-Tree Sparkling Pink Grapefruit Soda

Fill a highball with ice. Add bourbon and then grapefruit soda. Stir to combine. Garnish with a grapefruit wheel.
