This particular tawny is a blend of ports, aged in barrel, for an average of ten years; some less than ten, some much more so. Typical aged tawnies show lovely dark fruit notes intertwined with the flavors of baking spices, dried leaves, orange peel, hazelnut, and even candied caramel notes. The finish is sweet but balanced with its acids and fruit. Achieving this balance can be surprisingly tricky, and those of us who drink a fair amount of port can tell you, this balancing trick is often missed slightly by even good blenders and properties. Serve slightly chilled, usually as dessert or as an accompaniment to small portions of blue cheese, chocolate, or even biscotti.
