A NEW addition to the Surdyk's shelves are the Lanchava Collection from the country of Georgia. Georgia is the oldest-known wine region in the world with a history dating back more than 8,000 years. It has a unique tradition and its own unique grapes. Winemaking is as important to Georgia as many of the countries that you might think of when you consider the "Old World." These wines are an approachable introduction to what this historic region has to offer.
The wine collection "AI IA" derives from the Georgian sentence, "აი ია" which translates to "this is violet." This is first lesson when learning the Georgian language, & is our introduction to wines of the country. The letters “ა” (pronounced a) & “ი” (pronounced i) creates two words making one sentence, AI (this is) & IA (violet).
The AI IA Red wine is made from 100% Saperavi grapes from the Kakheti region of Georgia. It's dry, and elegant. You'll find notes of berry, spice, and toast. Saperavi is the most common grape variety of Georgia. It's deep red in color. If you're a fan of the bold flavors of Syrah, you should try this.
The AI IA White is made from 100% Rkatsiteli grapes, a common varietal for table wine in Georgia. It's very easy drinking with a refreshing palate, and would pair nicely with seafood.
Saba 5 is a White wine is made from 100% Mtsvane grapes. Mtsvane translates to "green" and you'll find the wine itself has a greenish hue. You'll find it to be aromatic and fruity.
Anastasia 9 is a semi-sweet wine also made from Saperavi grapes, harvested in the viticultural area of Kindzmarauli. It has a vibrant finish that would be a nice accompaniment to dessert at the end of a meal, particularly something chocolate!
