Description
While the summer months will see white and rosé wines getting much attention, red wines are still needed to pair with burgers, ribs, and steaks that are cooked over an open flame. Gundlach Bundschu winery in Sonoma has been family owned for 4 generations. They have a following among California wine lovers, and their Bordeaux-ish blend called “Mountain Cuvee” is one of my go-to wines for summer drinking. A rich blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Petite Sirah, this wine spends a generous 10 months in French oak. Loaded with red and blue fruit, vanilla, mint, and cocoa flavors, a full body, and a long, supple finish. This wine has tons of personality and a supple, velvety mouthfeel that elevates the smokiness of grilled food. Not a meat eater? Not a problem. While this is a big red, it’s beautifully balanced and works equally well with a simple cheese plate. - Noelle Starr
