Description
The area called Estrecho de Marin, where the Viña Elena bodega is located, lies in a valley flanked by two majestic mountains in southeastern Spain. This is DOP Jumilla's warmest and driest region and it's here where they strive to produce balanced and complex wines while steering clear of the age-old concept of over-ripeness. The vines used are planted on both sides of the valley: those in the east are subject to more shade and give the wine freshness, minerality, and elegance, while those in the west get more sunlight and give the wine the characteristic maturity and warmth of the Monastrell grape. The grapes are organic, dry-farmed, and hand harvested. Rich black cherry and plum aromas are deftly balanced by spicy black pepper and spice notes. The wine is full bodied but not heavy. Initial flavors of black cherry, blueberry, and plum segue to Mediterranean herbs and Monastrell's signature black pepper, with balanced acidity providing lift and freshness. Pair with grilled meats, especially lamb with rosemary, (and yes, it's still grilling season!); mushroom dishes; some charcuterie from Surdyk's Cheeseshop; even pizza and pasta. -Zach Rouillard
