One Bottle: Endless Possibilities

ONE BOTTLE, ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES

The second installment in a monthly series.

Surdyk's staff is here to show you how to use a specialty spirit or liqueur in several ways so you can feel confident about your purchase AND avoid lingering bottles in the back of the bar cabinet.


THE BOTTLE: LICOR 43


WHAT IS LICOR 43?:
Licor 43 is a sweet, golden liqueur made in the historic port city of Cartagena, Spain since the 1940s. It’s secret recipe, made with 43 different ingredients (hence the name) was inspired by an ancient Roman drink called “liquor mirabilis” (marvelous liquor). It has a smooth, vanilla-forward flavor with hints of citrus and spices. Great in cocktails, mixing it with coffee, or even just pouring it over ice.


Ways to Use It:

SPANISH MARGARITA

 

INGREDIENTS:

  1. 1½ oz Licor 43
  2. 1½ oz tequila
  3. Juice from half a lime
  4. Dash of orange bitters (optional)
  5. Ice cubes
  6. Garnishing: Slice of lemon and sprig of fresh mint

 

INSTRUCTIONS:

Place the first 5 ingredients into a cocktail shaker and shake until well chilled. Pour the mixture through a sieve into a glass. Garnish with a slice of lime and some fresh mint.


CARAJILLO

 

INGREDIENTS:

  1. 1½ oz Licor 43
  2. 1½ oz espresso
  3. Espresso Beans

INSTRUCTIONS:

Combine Licor 43 and espresso with ice in a cocktail shaker and shake until it develops a creamy froth. Strain into a lowball cocktail glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with espresso beans.


BATCHED SANGRIA

 

INGREDIENTS:

  1. 750ml (1 standard bottle) Spanish Tempranillo wine
  2. 3 cans of lemon lime soda
  3. 8 oz Licor 43
  4. 1 oz brandy
  5. Apple, lemon, and orange, sliced
  6. Garnishing: 1 Orange slice and 2 cinnamon sticks

INSTRUCTIONS:

Fill a large jug with 1/3 of ice cubes and add the sliced fruit. Pour in the red wine, soda, Licor 43, and brandy. Stir well. Serve over ice garnished with orange slices and cinnamon stick.


MINIBEER SHOTS

 

INGREDIENTS:

  1. 1½ oz Licor 43
  2. Splash of heavy cream

 

INSTRUCTIONS:

Chill a bottle of Licor 43 Original in the freezer and, when it’s nice and cold, pour Licor 43 into your shot glass. Carefully pour the cream over the back of spoon onto the Licor 43 and serve.


FUDGE 43

 

INGREDIENTS:

  1. 4 Tbsp Licor 43
  2. 1 (14oz can) of condensed milk
  3. 3 Tbsp butter
  4. 14 oz of milk chocolate chips

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Line an 8×8” baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. Combine the condensed milk, chocolate chips and butter in a saucepan to over medium heat until just about to boil. Lower heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Stirring frequently with a wooden spoon.
  3. Stir in the Licor 43 and pour the mixture into the prepared baking pan.
  4. Smooth the top and let harden for several hours in the refrigerator.
  5. Slice and serve.
