The changing of seasons encourages me to discover different styles of food, wine, spirits, and cigars. Now that winter is settling in for the next five months, I am revisiting my whiskies and thinking about more full-bodied cigars that will complement one another.
A new whiskey from a local favorite, Tattersall’s Port-Finished Rye, inspired me to find similarly complex, spicy, and full-bodied cigars to enjoy with this fantastic new release.
Ashton VSG (Virgin Sun Grown wrapper) Sorcerer (95188)
This is the epitome of a dark and rich style of cigar. The binder and filler are from the Dominican Republic, while the very dark Sumatran seed wrapper is from Ecuador. 7” x 49 ring gauge, the cigar is made by the Fuente family and has notes of cedar, earth, espresso beans, dark chocolate, and leather. It is described by Cigar Aficionado as “rich and focused,” and is consistently ranked in the Top 10 or Top 25 cigars of the year by the same publication.

Padron Cigar Company has long been recognized as one of the most consistent and highly rated cigar producers in the world. The Padron Serie 1926 No 9 Natural is a 5-1/4” x 56 ring gauge cigar, with 100% Nicaraguan filler, binder, and wrapper. Meticulously crafted by hand and box pressed in the Cuban tradition from 5-year aged Cuban-seed tobacco, this cigar is incredibly full bodied with complex flavors of leather, dark mocha, earth, coffee, and caramel. This complexity will appeal to the most discerning cigar smoker, and yet it is so creamy and smooth that it also appeals to those who prefer a mild smoke.

The Tattersall Rye is aged for 2 years in new charred barrels and is then aged for another 2 years in used tawny and ruby port barrels, which softens the spicy rye and creates a rich depth to the 100-proof whiskey.
