Description
For a wine that offers such simple pleasures, there seems to be a surprising amount of confusion swirling around Vinho Verde, from how it’s pronounced (it’s vee-nyo vair-duh, with little emphasis on the last part), to how it got its name (meaning “green wine,” it comes from the lushness of the region in the northwest corner of Portugal where it’s made, but perhaps also from the youthfulness of the wine when consumed), to the belief that it’s always slightly sweet and spritzy (it’s not). Fio a Fio, a recent addition to our Vinho Verde section, has quickly become my favorite. Made from a blend of Alvarinho, Loureiro, and Fernão Pires grapes, it’s wonderfully aromatic, and dry on the palate with ripe peach and citrus flavors. While maybe not a “serious” wine, it is seriously delicious—and an amazing value. Crisp and refreshing, it’s as enjoyable as a patio aperitif as it is paired with grilled fish and chicken or a fresh summer salad. -Wine Consultant David Mahoney
