Description
Wines made with Syrah grapes have always been a favorite of mine, beginning with those from Australia in the wine boom of the 1990s. Next, the Syrahs from California, followed by wines from the Rhone Valley in southern France. It is from this area that I recently tasted a remarkably affordable Syrah from Gard on the right bank of the Rhone River by Maison Brotte called Grand Vallon. The Brotte family has been making wines from their estate vineyards since 1931, with the fifth generation now involved in the family business. The Grand Vallon is made from 100% Syrah grapes and aged in 100-year-old oak vats as well as concrete vats for 10-12 months before bottling. The wine shows bright ruby red and purple hued colors, with a nose of earth, red and black fruits, dried spices, and classic black pepper. The first impression is of lush fruits like plum and cassis, smooth round tannins that create a rich mouthfeel, framed by notes of pepper and acidity that keeps the wine lively. These characteristics make this a very versatile wine that can be enjoyed on its own or with food such as roasted or grilled pork and chicken, soft and hard cheeses, as well as appetizers. Enjoy this wonderful Syrah from France, a shockingly affordable wine that will please your family and friends at your next get together. Salut! -Drew Fuller, Consultant
