The winery was started by Vito Catania in 1996 and builds on his family’s experience as multiple generations of winegrowers and winemakers. The Gulfi Rossojbleo is classified as DOC Sicilia Rosso and is made from 100% Nero d'Avola grapes using natural techniques in both the vineyard (biodynamic organic farming, no irrigation, hand harvest) and winery (minimal intervention). The color is a vibrant ruby red and the nose shows lively red fruits, plum, and blackberry, subtle anise and dried herbs with a subtle dusty earth note. The medium body wine shows the bright red and black fruit flavors up front, followed by persistent fine-grained tannins that help make the wine bolder, ending with a long finish. This outstanding wine checks all the cool Natural wine boxes, and yet has more complexity, depth, and a memorable finish than other natural wines that I have tasted. Pair this with first courses, chicken, pork, seafood, or medium-bodied cheeses.
