Description

The Botanist Gin has been crafted at the historic Bruichladdich distillery on the island of Islay off the west coast of Scotland since 2010, the distillery itself having been established in 1881. While this terroir is rugged, the landscape and climate are greener and gentler than you might expect. This diverse geology is filled with peat bogs, tranquil wetlands, salty marshes, and rich grasslands perfect for wild botanicals to thrive. This abundance of flora is truly a gin distiller’s dream. The Botanist uses 31 botanicals: 9 core gin botanicals and 22 foraged from the island. With no essences, oils, or artificial flavoring added, the flavors are influenced solely by the foraged botanicals. Two types of juniper are used, as well as apple mint, birch leaves, sweet chamomile, elder and heather flowers, thyme, clover, mint, and sage. The wheat spirit is slowly distilled in a Lomond still, which is a hybrid of column and pot still, one of the last in existence with only six ever being made. Complex floral aromas fill the nose, balanced by lemon/lime citrus, juniper, spicy mint, and earthy coriander. The palate is medium- to full- bodied, rich, and complex. Flavors of pear, citrus, fresh herbs, and soft juniper are accented by the salty/savory side of the gin. The finish has baking spice and fades away relaxed and clean. Of course, this gin would work great in many modern cocktails – I prefer the classics: Martinis, Negronis, or mix with your favorite tonic and a lime wedge for the perfect G+T. -Spirit Buyer, Zach Rouillard
