The experts at Surdyk’s have been a trusted source for advice on wine, beer, and spirits since we first opened our doors in 1934. And while our lives all look a little different these days, our staff is still here to help!
To help you shop during this time, we’ve decided to put together a list of some of the things that we’d be pointing out to you if you were shopping in the store. Most of you are familiar with our Staff Selections, so we’ve made some selections and will be bringing you picks and sale prices throughout the month of May.

Noelle's Pick: Old Forester Ready-to-Drink Mint Julep

Last year, I was fortunate to visit Louisville about two weeks before the Kentucky Derby. I didn’t grow up watching it – and it wasn’t until a few years ago that I began to love Bourbon, so arriving at the mecca for both was quite the experience, to say the least. After an early morning tour of Churchill Downs, I was hooked. Louisville, the entire city it seems, starts planning for the next Derby about 10 seconds after the race has finished. And everywhere we went we were offered a Mint Julep, the deceptively potent combination of heady bourbon and refreshing mint, made perfectly balanced with a touch of simple syrup. And while there are many recipes out there - only one can be the Official Mint Julep of the Kentucky Derby and it is here in this bottle. Old Forester’s has held the honor for almost 100 years. In fact, an average of 120,000 Juleps are poured on race day at Churchill Downs alone! Pour over ice and add some mint – it’s that easy. While the 146th Derby has been postponed (originally May 2nd – now, hopefully, September 5th), I intend to spend that original race day watching some of the great old races online and enjoying a Mint Julep (or two).

Churchill London Dry Gin

The recipe dates back to the late 1800s and has bright notes of juniper with coriander, orris and lemon rounding out the botanicals. A great choice for a variety of cocktails but we feel that the classic note of pine makes this an ideal base for the tonic of your choice. The low price means you will be all set for the warm months ahead!

Jim's Pick: Wild Turkey 101 1.75 Liter

In Kentucky, the amount of Bourbon produced annually has more than doubled in the past 10 years. The same can be said for amount of space that this popular spirit occupies at Surdyk’s. With no end in sight to the boom, coupled with the sea of choices – I am often asked what Bourbon I prefer to drink. If we are talking about Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey – not American whiskey made elsewhere in the US - it is a guarantee that my home bar will always house a bottle of Wild Turkey 101, the flagship bottling for this brand. I love it for many reasons, not least being the tradition that this bottle represents: a distillery that has been in production since 1869, led by legend Jimmy Russell who has been the Master Distiller for over 60 years (now joined by his son, Eddie – the only father/son Master Distiller duo in the world), and a recipe that hasn’t changed since Jimmy’s been at the helm. Carefully made using water from the Kentucky River, limestone filtering, a yeast strain unique to Wild Turkey, and the insistence of a heavy No. 4 char for all of the barrels (known as “Alligator Char” for how the inside of the barrel look once fired) which will house the high rye bourbon for somewhere between 6-8 years before being bottled and released. Simply put, it is delicious. Full of rich flavors of toffee, caramel, vanilla, and cinnamon and the warm, spicy rye notes that linger all the way into your chest (officially known as a “Kentucky Hug”). The finish is longer and drier than the sweet aromatics would suggest, thanks to its higher proof. It’s that proof makes this an incredibly versatile bourbon for a wide variety of expressions. Drink it neat, over a rock, or as the base for any of the classic (and not so classic) bourbon cocktails out there. – Jim Larson

Olmeca Tequilas

Noticing a gap in the “accessible” end of the tequila market, Henry Besant and Dre Masso, both Award winning bartenders, partnered with Maestro Tequilero Jesús Hernandez to create high-quality tequila that captures authentic production without giving in to excess. They wanted a tequila for bartenders. One that’s light, more crisp than you’d expect. One thus that is easy to build upon and highlights the flavors you add. The Blanco’s lightness lends itself easily to the bite of fresh lime or grapefruit. The Reposado’s added mellow depth from 6-8 months aging in former whiskey barrels, supports mango, pineapple and coconut sturdily but unobtrusively. Success made possible by ideal growing conditions for their agave roughly 2,000 m above sea level, and in mineral-rich volcanic soil. After growing for 7-8 years, they are hand-selected and hand-pick. Next they are slow-cooked for up to three days and then let rest, scorching the surface but locking the juices inside. A combination of a roller mill and 2-ton volcanic Tahona Stone then shred the agave. After this, each batch of agave is fermented for an average of 36 hours. Distillation in custom made and exclusive small copper stills helps maintain the tequila’s essence and quality overtime. This has made it a customer favorite for value – see why.
