When was the last time you enjoyed a picnic? With the arrival of Spring, I would like to strongly suggest you take every opportunity to dine al fresco. All you need is a little help from Surdyk’s. Think of us as your picnic headquarters.
Begin in our Cheese Shop, where our selection of cheeses and cured meats is the best. Let our expert cheesemongers guide you to the perfect wedge; some Marieke Aged Gouda or Spanish Leonora would be a great start. Be sure to include Red Table Meat’s award-winning Coppa or Big Chet’s salami, made right down the road from Surdyk’s. Add some fresh Rustica bread and one of our famous cognac brownies, and I promise your day is about to greatly improve.
Next, head into our liquor store. Our craft can cooler has expanded over the winter months and includes a wide selection of picnic-perfect beers. May I suggest Insight Brewing’s (another Northeast Minneapolis neighbor) Hell Chicken Pale Ale + Yuzu; it’s crisp, citrusy, and very food friendly. When it comes to wine, we are seeing more and more made with screw tops, which are ideal for outdoor dining. Bill McCleary, Surdyk’s wine consultant and picnic aficionado, suggests two equally delicious and equally easy to open options: Jadix Picpoul de Pinet from France’s Languedoc region is a bright and zesty white, and Christopher Michael Red Blend from Washington is a supple wine full of red berries and spice.
Maybe your picnic will be squeezed into your workday lunch hour. No problem! Get one of our freshly made sandwiches (my favorite is the Minneapple Melt) and one our housemade soups and find a spot in the sun. Surdyk’s has everything you need to picnic properly.
