Rizieri Barbera d’Alba

In the Piedmont wine region of Italy, the Barolo wine is the star attraction, but most resident Italians prefer and love the Barbera grape and the delicious
plummy red wine it makes for everyday meals. It certainly is my favorite, as well. This particular Rizieri bottling is fabulous, a fall sale feature, and should be in your shopping cart. Its vibrant purple-ruby color shows its youthfulness, and its perfumed dark-red berry fruit has a natural grape essence to it that promotes pure soft, yet full flavor. This is a small production wine (200 cases) from a single vineyard offering true Italian character, hand-harvested and unfiltered for richness and complexity. Barbera is known for its bright acidity, which makes it a great food wine. I had it recently with lamb chops and curry couscous, and the wine/food pairing was marvelous! Some light peppery spice notes and just the right amount of tannic firmness provide excellent taste balance. This is a red wine that has quality built-in and all the satisfying goodness that makes it memorable. The price is a great value, and I suggest a supply at home to last through the coming winter months. – Bill McCleary
