I love to travel and enjoy learning about places I intend to visit. Portugal is definitely high on my list, and one of my favorite ways to advance my knowledge is to taste the local wines, which, in the case of Portugal, most famously is the Douro Valley. The wine that captured my imagination is Quinta do Portal Colheita Tinto 2012. The wine is composed of fresh and fruity Touriga Roriz (60%), floral Touriga Nacional (25%), and the delicate Touriga Franca grape (15%). It is aged for 9 months in French oak, and at my first taste, I noticed all of the familiar flavors of a big red wine, such as blackberries, dark cherries, cassis, and some toasty spice notes from the oak. The surprise came fairly quickly when the dark flavors were joined by lighter red and blue fruit notes that provided a sense of brightness, followed by smooth but persistent tannins that lead to a long finish. Enjoy this beautiful wine with cheeses, roast lamb, and grilled meat, and look forward to the time you can taste this wine while visiting the stunning Douro Valley in person!
