Kilikanoon Killerman’s Run Shiraz

It seems as if the theme of “what’s old is new again” is playing itself out on the shelves of Surdyk’s. Iconic wines and brands that for a variety of reasons left us for a number of years are now happily back again. In this case, I am thinking of Kilikanoon Winery from Clare Valley in south Australia, where the vineyards thrive in continental climates where a high daily temperature range (as much as 68°F in summer) promotes tannin, structure, and color in red wines. The first bit of good news for this wine is that 2013 was a very good vintage for red wines in the Clare Valley, with warm days and cool nights promoting full fruit ripeness, while still retaining natural acidity for balance. My tasting notes in April show a wine with intense inky black-purple color, and a nose of blue fruits, cassis, spicy black pepper, and clove. Young, assertive black berry and plum fruit, with fine tannins and subtle smoky char from 18 months in French oak barrels. All of those descriptors aside, my most important comment was “WOW!” This incredible wine drinks well right now, yet will reward those with patience to cellar for the next 8-10 years. Perfect for your next steak. Cheers mate! (Clare Valley, Australia)
