Description

Vinho Verde from Portugal feels right to me in the spring – it’s fresh, light, crisp but not austere, and oh, so quaffable. Now if only I could get some body and depth as well, without having to spend over $20. The people at Strub winery are here to help. Silvaner is known for being a very neutral flavored grape with good acidity, but if made carelessly, can feel a bit boring. That is where the feinherb (off-dry) part of the equation comes in. Now, this wine is on the dry end of offdry, but the residual sugar that’s left lifts this wine above its peers. Pouring a pale straw color, the nose is soft, yet alive with a tone of hay and zesty lemon. The body has a creaminess while maintaining a refreshing acidity. Flavors bound around your mouth – herbs, whiffs of honey, citrus peel cosseted by a light salt spray finish. Best yet, at only 11.5% alcohol, it drinks so lightly you’ll wonder where the next glass is. Absolutely perfect for spicy dishes, marvelous with fish and shellfish, or great as an aperitif. Everyone can find a perfect time to open this exciting little wine. - Jim Larson
