Nigl Gruner Veltliner Freiheit

$23.99

Description

Nigl’s Freiheit is sourced from 4 different vineyards in the hills above the city of Krems, Austria. The soils here are primarily löss and the temperature is moderated by the valley’s steep slopes and high elevation. The name Freiheit means “freedom” and stems from the belief that this area was the first vineyard land in the Kremstal valley not controlled by the Church or a feudal estate. This wine is a textural sensation. Don’t get me wrong - the flavors are great and well defined - lime, wet stones, green bean, and white pepper with an intriguing yeasty-brioche finish. But it’s really how this wine delivers those flavors that makes it a real gem. It’s crisp and fresh, with a slight sparkle on your tongue’s tip. Then smooth on the palate and weighty on the finish. To find such distinct sensations all curled up in one “entry level” Gruner was a real treat. This wine is very versatile in pairings. Things as far flung as spicy Asian or your turkey day dinner would be well accompanied by this. - Jim Larson, Wine Consultant (Staff Selection, Fall 2017)
