Trends can be found everywhere in the world, from fashion and finance to right here in every aisle at Surdyk’s. The wine department has certainly witnessed its share of trends over the years. Think back to when Australian wines were everywhere, and we all remember the Malbec invasion from Argentina. (In fact that trend is still going strong even though domestic red blends are certainly giving those affordable South American reds a run for their money.) What will be next? Ask any of our expert wine consultants—they each have strong speculations on the next big wine trend.

On the spirits side, we are currently at the epicenter of the whiskey movement. Bourbon and whisk(e)y are in high demand. We have watched our selection grow by leaps and bounds over the past few years as new distilleries arrive on the scene ready to take their place next to the long-established whiskey houses.

Beer is no different. From hop-heavy craft beers to dry-style hard ciders, new items are being added to our shelves every day. I truly believe there is no better time to be a beer lover.

Another interesting trend is developing—session cocktails. Inspired by session beers (beer brewed to have a lower alcohol content), the idea is to create something delicious to sip that won’t knock you out, but also by no means is lacking in flavor. By leaving out the heavy hitting usual suspects (such as vodka, gin and whiskey) and leaning on supporting players such as vermouth, sherry and bitters, you can make yourself a drink (or two) and still feel good in the morning. In this world of barrel-strength everything, I, for one, welcome this trend.

Below are two of my favorites. This summer, find everything you need to be a trendsetter at Surdyk’s!

Cheers,
Melissa Surdyk
