Spain is certainly the place to find delicious wine at a great value. Once in awhile we are able to make an already great value even better. Luzon Verde is one of our regular brands in the store, 100% Monastrell and organically produced. After a recent staff tasting we all were excited by how good this old favorite is.
We’ve decided you also need to revisit this great wine, so we dropped the price even more: $7.99 per bottle – and it’s the perfect wine to buy by the case.
Luzon Verde 2012 was already a great sale value, but with the even lower price, we highly suggest you stock up for your summer barbecues. With temperatures climbing this week, today is the perfect day for stocking up and firing up that grill.
From the Jumilla region in southeastern Spain where Monastrell, kin to the French Mouvedre grape, thrives. Fruit comes up front with dark cherry, bright craisin, dark cocoa, and pepper. The palate retains the fruit aromatics, and are joined by rich plum notes that are livened by a pleasant acidity and spiciness that are typical of Spain. Ends with good tannic structure and a long, lingering finish.

I admit that I took this wine for granted for a while. Recently we tasted this as part of a staff-refresher on some of our nearly-forgotten wines of Spain. Dang! Big aromatics here of blackberry, blueberry, earth, anise, and black pepper. Almost felt no need to actually drink the wine.. almost… ! I found great follow-through from the aromatics onto the palate. Medium bodied, with lovely fruit and perfectly judged tannins, the dark flavors inherent to Monastrell give this wine an extra dose of gravitas. Would be perfect for virtually anything with a little char on it, say maybe, from the grill! A great drink for well under ten bucks, and one that will handsomely repay short-term (1 year) cellaring.
Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar:
Brilliant ruby. Intense, primary aromas of dark berries and violet, with a spicy topnote. On the palate, spicy boysenberry and cherry compote flavors are complicated by subtle licorice and cracked pepper nuances. Closes on a sweet note, with very good liveliness and length. 89 points
