Nan Bailly represents the second generation of this Hastings winery, whose original vineyard was planted by her father. Voyageur is their signature red wine, combining the original French varieties planted in their vineyard in 1973 (Marechal Foch and Leon Millot), with the modern Frontenac grape developed by The University of Minnesota Viticulture Department.
The wine shows aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis, and plum fruits, with some toasty vanilla notes from a year of barrel aging. There is just enough acidity to help balance the fruit and oak, and the finish is lush and memorable. A great example of what is possible in creating a beautiful and complex wine in MN.
